How To Get Cited By ChatGPT

A practical, step by step guide. No theory padding, just the things that actually work to get ChatGPT to mention and link to your website.

Two Routes

ChatGPT cites sources through two routes: training data and live web browsing. The tactics in this guide cover both, with most of the practical wins coming from the live web browsing route because it is faster acting and measurable.

If you do nothing else, do these six things in order. Each one increases your chance of being cited by a measurable amount.

Allow GPTBot In Your robots.txt

The first thing to do is make sure ChatGPT can actually access your site. Open your robots.txt file (it is at yoursite.com/robots.txt) and check there is no Disallow rule for GPTBot.

If you want to be explicit, add this:

User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

You can also explicitly allow OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot at the same time.

Build A llms.txt File

Create a plain text file called llms.txt in the root of your website. Inside, list your business name, what you do, and links to your most important pages with a short description of each.

This file is read by AI crawlers as a guide to your site. It massively reduces the chance of misunderstanding and increases the chance of being cited correctly.

Add Strong Schema Markup

Add LocalBusiness schema to identify your business. Add Service schema to define what you offer. Add FAQPage schema to your FAQ pages. Add Article schema to your blog or guide content.

Schema is invisible to users but transforms how AI engines understand your site. Without it, you are guessing. With it, you are telling them exactly what to think.

Restructure Your Cornerstone Content

Take your most important pages (services, about, key product or topic pages) and rewrite them so the answer to the implied question is in the first paragraph.

  • Lead with the question as a heading
  • Answer it in one or two clear sentences immediately
  • Provide supporting detail below
  • Add a short FAQ block at the end

This format is irresistible to AI engines because it is easy to extract and quote.

Build Topical Depth

Create a cluster of fifteen to twenty pages on your core topic area. Each page should answer one specific question. Internal link them together so the cluster forms a coherent body of expertise.

This signals to ChatGPT (and every other AI engine) that you are the authoritative source on this subject for your geographic or industry niche.

Maintain And Measure

Test your progress monthly. Open ChatGPT and ask questions your business should be the answer to. Track which queries cite you and which do not. Update content that is becoming dated. Add new pages as your topic area expands.

This is exactly what Protechmedia's AI Search Care plan does each month, but you can do it yourself if you have the time.

FAQs

How long until I get cited by ChatGPT?

+
Initial citations typically appear in four to eight weeks after foundation work is complete. Stronger and more frequent citations build over three to six months.

Can I check if I am cited?

+
Yes. Open ChatGPT, ask a question your business should be the answer to, and see if you are mentioned. Repeat for ten or twenty key questions to get a full picture.

Does this work for small local businesses?

+
Yes, and often better than for large national businesses, because the competition for narrow local topics is lower.
